The World Fisheries Day was celebrated at Fisheries College and Research Institute here on Tuesday.
Awareness programme on “Fisheries and Aquaculture” was organised by the Department of Aquaculture as part of the programme.
At the inaugural function, all staff and students took the World Fisheries Day pledge.
K. S. Vijay Amirtharaj, Assistant Professor and Head (in-charge), Department Aquaculture, welcomed the gathering.
N. V. Sujathkumar, Dean (in-charge) in his presidential address highlighted the depletion of fisheries resources in marine and freshwater through over exploitation and unsustainable fishing methods.
A total of 50 students from Subbiah Vidyalayam Girls’ Higher Secondary School participated and benefited.
Students were also taken to the Mariculture Research Farm Facility at Tharuvaikulam for field exposure and were also given hands-on training at Vannamei shrimp farming.
As part of the celebration, poster making competition on the theme “The Future of Fisheries” was conducted.
P. Dheeran a student of III B.F.Sc., won the first prize.
S. Babuganesh, III B.F.Sc and M.Vishal, I B.F.Sc., bagged second and third prizes, respectively.
