Revenue Minister R.B. Udhaya Kumar and Information Minister Kadambur C. Raju inspected the MGR centenary celebration programme venue here on Wednesday.
The district administration is gearing up to organise the centenary celebration of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran here on November 22. Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswamy will preside over the function which will be held on the premises of Government Industrial Training Institute at Korampallam.
The Revenue Minister said awareness programmes would be conducted to include all farmers in the crop insurance scheme.
Responding to a query on farmers’ agitation against delay in disbursal of crop insurance benefits at 10 fircas in the district, he said the issue would be taken to the notice of Chief Minister to ensure early disbursal.
A giant-size balloon was released for the centenary celebration at the venue. In a statement, the Information Minister said various development projects would be inaugurated and foundation stone laid for new projects by the Chief Minister on the occasion. Around 25,000 beneficiaries in the district would get welfare assistance.
The centenary celebration, which began in Madurai on June 30, was continuing in a grand manner in various districts across the State, he said.
S.T. Chellapandian, district secretary of AIADMK, and Superintendent of Police P. Mahendran were present.
Earlier, the Minister garlanded the statue of Rao Bahadur Cruz Fernandez, former Chairman of Thoothukudi Municipality, who was instrumental in bringing drinking water supply to the town. Cadre of various political parties also paid tributes on the occasion.
